About the Institute
An online research institute for Chinese symbolic systems.
We treat Chinese characters as design objects: visual decisions that carry meaning. Our work connects individual symbols to the cosmological systems that organise them, and to the cross-cutting concepts that thread through them.
Mission
Hanzi Design is an online research institute for Chinese symbolic systems. We publish characters, cosmologies, and concepts as design objects. The project treats Chinese writing not as a language-learning problem but as a visual and cultural archive, one that encodes thousands of years of thought about nature, structure, and meaning.
Methodology
Our approach is built on three principles:
- Observation over translation. We look at characters before we define them. Their structure is their argument.
- Pattern over memorisation. Characters belong to systems. Understanding the system makes individual characters legible.
- Connection over isolation. A character is never just itself. It connects to cosmologies, concepts, and other characters in a web of meaning.
Location
The institute operates digitally, based out of the UK. Physical exhibitions and printed publications are planned as the project develops.
